It is crazy hot in Atlanta, and there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight. I’ve checked Weather.com every morning this week, and every day the forecast says we’ll be in the 90s for the next 10 days. Ugh. I still say that I would rather run in the heat than in the cold. Running in the cold is definitely not my thing. And it’s not that I love running in this heat either, but I can deal with it if I do it early before the sun is beating down.
But still – it’s hot! And it makes me think of my favorite Will Ferrell line from Anchorman – “It’s so damn hot… Milk was a bad choice.” (Totally hilarious movie, by the way.)
But actually, milk is a great choice, especially when it’s hot and I sweat more than I normally do, as a recovery drink. And chocolate milk is even better, due to its high carbohydrate and protein levels, for replenishing lost fluids and tired muscles. Studies have shown it performs just as well – if not better – as “real” (and more expensive) recovery drinks.
Good news to me, because I love milk and all things dairy. A typical post long-run drink for me is a smoothie – one frozen banana (sliced), a big handful of berries, and milk (sometimes w/protein powder). I’ve also really gotten into Greek yogurt lately. My favorite new breakfast is vanilla Greek yogurt with blueberries, raspberries, and granola.
But maybe I’ll need to pick up some chocolate milk too! I’m going to try to get six to eight miles in tomorrow, depending on how long I can hang in the heat! I keep reminding myself that it took me a little time to get acclimated to it last summer, but I finally did. Looking forward to getting to that point again this summer, but I’d be really happy if we saw a bit of a temperature drop soon.
