I have a big goal this year: to run 1,000 miles over the course of 2019. I’ve set this goal before, in fact, that’s how this blog first started. But, I’ve never actually done it. In fact, I wasn’t even that close when I tried it in 2011 – I was 200 miles short.

My life is a lot busier and more tiring now than it was then (because of two very adorable little people that live in my house). But strangely (delusionally?) I’m actually much more confident I can achieve this goal today.

You see, back when I started running, I enjoyed it, but I lacked discipline. I didn’t have the fire in my belly that made me want to keep working, keep getting better. I loved the process of setting a goal and training for a race, but once the race was over, I would do the prescribed recovery time, but when my week (or two) of rest was over, I would have a hard time starting again, especially if the race was in the fall and was faced with the prospect of winter running, which I hated. So, my training would just totally fizzle out, sometimes for months. And then when I’d start training for a new race, I’d be starting from zero.

But somewhere over the last year or so, running has shifted for me. I’ve emerged from the fog of pregnancy and infants and toddlers to find this amazing place where I am not using my body to sustain life in any way and where I can actually sleep for eight hours most nights if I want to. It is glorious. And in this amazing place, I find I actually have a little time to think about what I want again. And what I want is to have something that’s mine, to set little goals that turn into bigger goals, to work really hard and see what I’m capable of.

Last year, when the iconic Boston Marathon became even more iconic with Des Linden’s amazing win in the worst weather conditions ever, I declared to Tim – “I’m going to qualify for that race someday.” Watching that epic competition lit something inside me that’s still there. To be sure, qualifying for Boston is not a “this year” goal. I’m nowhere close to being that fast. It’s the kind of goal that requires building, working, keeping the faith – sometimes for years.

But I think I can do it. I really do. It will probably take me a long time (I’m thinking this is a five-year goal), but I’m looking forward to seeing where the journey takes me.

So, that brings me back to this year. 1,000 miles. Including a marathon (my second, and first in eight years). Big goals. Kind of scary goals. But I’m so excited about them.

My mini goal for January is 50 miles – which I’ve already surpassed, hitting 53 miles during my run today. I’m trying to start slow and conservative, since I didn’t run at all during the month of December as I was recovering from minor surgery. So far, so good. I ran 16 miles this week and will continue to build very slowly to avoid injury. Staying healthy is (obviously) critical to achieving my goals this year. I’m keeping my eye on prize.

    Janice,
    I love your enthusiasm, your confidence, your drive!
    You will do it; I’m sure.
    Being able to get eight hours of sleep is key for you. And taking care of your body with good food is another plus.
    This is the year! Everything is aligned!
